Click to listen

Sohrab Sepehri is a well known modern poet of Iran.

He was born in Kashan (Iran) on 15th of Mehr. His dad always liked art therefore Sohrab showed interest in art from very young age. Sohrab’s dad became disablled after a long illness and Sohrab spent most of his free time painting and learning from his dad. He is considered one of the five most famous modern Persian (Iranian) poets who have practiced “New Poetry” . Other practitioners of this form were Nima Youshij, Ahmad Shamlou, Mehdi Akhavan-Sales, and Forough Farrokhzad, all of whom are now dead.

His poetry is full of humanity and concern for human values. He loved nature and refers to it frequently in his poems.

Sohrab had only one brother and two sisters. Sohrab’s first poem’s were published when he was only 19 and it called  “در كنار چمن يا آرامگاه عشق”

Sohrab’s dad died in Tehran in 1341 (Solar Calander) and Sohrab expressed his feelings in this poem

Sohrab’s passed away in Pars hospital in Tehran after suffering with luekemia in year 1359 Solar Calander (1980)  but was burried in his birth place Kashan as he wished.

I have beem meaning to list all the famous poets of Iran, poems of some of this poets always been taught in schools

  • Sheikh Saadi, Although Saadi was born and died in Shiraz, Persia (Iran), during his life he traveled extensively. His two famous books are Bustan and Gulestan which are taught in schools. Saadi is probably the first Persian poet to have been translated into European languages. A German version of the Gulestan appeared in 1654.

Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you have no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain.
  • Hafez, his complete name is Khaje Shamsodin Mohammed Hafez Shirazi. He was born in Shiraz, by very young age he knew the whole Quran by heart and he memorized many of his favourite poems, specially poems from Saadi and Attar. Hafez had to leave the day school and work in a bakery after his father’s death and had to deliver bread to weathy part of the town and this is the time he saw Shakhe-Nabat a young woman of incredible beauty therefore if you notice many of his poems are addressed to Shakhe-Nabat.

Those who turn lead into gold
Will they ever our sight behold?
I hide my ills from false physicians
May my cure come from the invisible fold.
